CONGRATULATIONS TO DAVE SMITH RED BULL FINAL 5 CHAMPION 2007

With one hole to play 2 good friends were battling for this years title. Defending champion Eric Reucroft and Dave Smith, a 44-year-old 13 handicapper from South Leeds Golf Club, the opportunity to snatch the title in yet another nail-biting climax to the 54 hole tournament. It was an exact reversal of the climax to the 2006 final where Reucroft pipped Smith on the final green to win the title.

18 club golfers from the UK played in the Grand Final of the Red Bull Final 5 in the Grand Canyon State. The Grand Final consisted of three rounds of stableford competition with a twist – points on the final five holes of each round would count double. Therefore a net par would receive four points rather than the customary two and so on.

Rob Watson, a 17-year-old from Hertfordshire led after round one scoring an impressive 54 points over the Stadium course at Scottsdale. Smith was in second place, four points behind. At We-Ko-Pa another youngster was inspired by the surroundings. Joe Kane a 14-year-old, 24- handicapper, from Cardiff, burned up the desert course scoring 48 points, to put him in joint second place with Rob Brooks from Manchester. Watson retained the lead with Smith and Reucroft in joint fourth place.

However during the final round at Grayhawk Kane and Watson put themselves out of contention with disappointing front and back nines respectively. Brooks also started slowly and had too much ground to make up. Smith and Reucroft, in the penultimate group were battling hard. On the 17th tee the defending champ had a four point lead but he made a hash of the 17th, failing to score while Smith made par on the hole to swing a 2 point advantage. They shared a par on the final green for Smith to revenge his 2006 defeat.
